Defining vs non-defining
- Defining (essential, no commas): The students who study pass.
- Non-defining (extra info, with commas, no that): My brother, who lives in Spain, is a chef.
- Which can refer to a whole clause: She didn't call, which worried me.
Omitting the pronoun
You can omit it when it is the object of the clause: The book (that) I read was long. You cannot omit a subject pronoun.
Watch out
- Don't repeat the pronoun:
The book that I read it. - Don't add another possessive after whose.
- Formal: preposition + whom/which (the man to whom I spoke).
En español
Who = quien (personas), which = que (cosas), whose = cuyo, where = donde. La cláusula definitoria es esencial (sin comas); la no definitoria da información extra (con comas). El pronombre de objeto puede omitirse.
