Form
| Type | If-clause | Main clause | Example |
| past → present | if + past perfect | would + base verb | If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. |
| present → past | if + past simple (were) | would have + past participle | If I were braver, I would have told her. |
Use
- Past condition, present result: something that did or didn't happen then still affects now. If she hadn't missed the bus, she would be here now.
- Present condition, past result: a permanent quality or situation would have changed a past event. If he were a good driver, he wouldn't have had the accident.
- Common time words: now, today, still (present result) · yesterday, last year, then (past result).
Watch out
- No would in the if-clause:
If I would have studied → If I had studied. - Match each clause to its time:
If I had a car, I would have gone now → If I had a car, I would go now. - Use have, not of:
would of called → would have called. Use the past participle: had went → had gone.
En español
Condicionales mixtos combinan tiempos distintos. Pasado → presente: Si hubiera estudiado medicina, sería médico ahora. Presente → pasado: Si fuera más valiente, se lo habría dicho.
